Asics Onitsuka Tiger Shoes
ASICS has grown to become one of the leading shoe and sports equipment companies in the world, and their performance footwear styles continuously receive top consumer rankings. ASICS stands for the first letters of the words in the Latin proverb, "Anima Sana in Corpore Sano," meaning "a sound mind in a sound body."
ASICS Corporation started out in 1949, in an effort to provide children with sports shoes following World War II. The company went by many different names before it was known simply as ASICS. In 1958, the company amalgamated with Tokyo Onitsuka Co., Ltd.. In 1963, Onitsuka Co., Ltd. Was absorbed into Chuo Sangyo Co., Ltd. Finally, in 1977, Onitsuka Co., Ltd. merged with GTO Co., Ltd, a sporting goods manufacturer, and JELENK Co., Ltd, a sportswear manufacturer, to become the ASICS Corporation we know today.
Originally, ASICS operated under the name “Onitsuka Tiger” as a manufacturer of footwear and equipment for sports such as football, tennis, running, squash, volleyball, and golf. Now, Onitsuka Tiger is a vintage collection of ASICS shoes.
Today, ASICS is one of the greats in the footwear industry. A few of the reasons that ASICS shoes have become a favourite among runners: their distinctive and lightweight gel cushioning design that effectively absorbs shock, ventilated soles to increase air flow, and removable sock liners. ASICS sneakers are known for their comfort and durability – they will last for a long time before they need to be replaced. ASICS shoes won the Runner's Choice Award from Runner's Magazine in 2007, and they are consistently highly rated both online and in publications.
Two of the most popular styles of ASICS shoes include the ASICS GT-2000 series and their Gel Nimus 12. ASICS designs shoes for all budgets, as their footwear prices range from $50 (the Gel-Maverick) to $180 (the Gel-Kinsei 3).
Despite the name change to ASICS Shoes, a vintage collection of ASICS Onitsuku Tiger sneakers remain popular. The trademark design of the ASICS Onitsuku Tiger is the “Mexico lines” stripe design, which was developed for the 1968 Olympic Games. Following the Mexico Olympics, ASICS sneakers became a hot item worldwide. In the 1970s, the iconic FABRE shoes were launched, followed by a line of competitive winter shoes that were used in the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics.
While Onitsuku Tiger shoes started out as functional sports footwear, they have become a fashion statement among young adults who wear them for their vintage appeal. The original tiger face is no longer a feature on the shoe, but the signature stripe remains the same. They have been released in a number of different colour ways over the years – everything from gold and burgundy to beige and chocolate brown. ASICS has since released Onitsuka Tiger bags and clothing, including stylish vintage shirts, hoodies, messenger bags and more!
ASICS continues to be an innovator in athletic footwear and apparel. In 1990, ASICS opened the Research Institute of Sports Science in Kobe, a 45,000-square-foot facility where scientists, athletes and coaches work together to create technically advanced products that last.
